So, about this Jane Austen heroine quiz…….
I have to tell you that I’ve taken this quiz three different times now. The reason is that, the first time I took it, I found myself unsure which answer to put for a few of the questions. More than one answer seemed appropriate—but obviously, you can only choose one.
And so, the first time I took the quiz, my result was this:
You are Elizabeth Bennet of Pride & Prejudice! You are intelligent, witty, and tremendously attractive. You have a good head on your shoulders, and oftentimes find yourself the lone beacon of reason in a sea of ridiculousness. You take great pleasure in many things. You are proficient in nearly all of them, though you will never own it. Lest you seem too perfect, you have a tendency toward prejudgement that serves you very ill indeed.
I posted this result on the sidebar of my blog. But then I went back to the quiz and did it again, this time changing just one of my answers, selecting the other of the two choices I’d been at variance over.
The result of making that single change:
You are Anne Elliot of Persuasion! Let’s face it; you’re easily persuaded, particularly when friends and relatives try to use “the Elliot way” against you. But this doesn’t mean that you don’t have conviction. Actually, your sense of duty is overwhelming. And though you won’t stick your neck out too often, you have learned to speak up when it counts. To boot, you know how to handle sticky situations. You love deeply and constantly.
Just now, I took the quiz a third time. This time, I altered my answers for every question I’d deliberated on the first time. Any place I found where I’d been hesitant upon first taking the quiz, I chose the “other” answer.
Again, my final result was to be told I was most like Anne Elliot.
My conclusion in all this is that, for most of my life, I have been most like Anne Elliot, at least insofar as I have been easily persuaded by others. Now that I am older, however, I am more “set in my ways,” and far less likely to allow someone else’s opinions to sway me. I know my own mind and am more confident. My “Elizabeth Bennet” answers reflect this change. Of course, the bad part about this is that it also indicates I might be more judgmental of others than I used to be, and that is definitely something I have been trying very, very hard to avoid!
Not that any of this matters at all! It’s just for fun. Interestingly, my overall favorite Jane Austen novel is Emma (a heroine who, I am sure, the quiz showed me to be the least similar to!). Persuasion is the novel closest to my heart; and Pride & Prejudice is my favorite when it comes to movie adaptations!
Which Jane Austen heroine are you? Which Jane Austen novels do you like best?

Hi Kim,
I think you have the best qualities of both heroines! I took the quiz three different times, changing my answers to reflect that slight bit of indecision I had the first time…and each time it came out Elinor Dashwood.
The older I get, the more Elinor I think I do become. But I thought I would turn out like Fanny Price.

Sabrina,
It was very nice of you to say that you think I have the best qualities of Elizabeth and Anne. I am glad to know I am not the only one who was unsure of the absolute best answer on some of those questions!
Do you know…..when we were younger, whenever I saw or read anything of Marianne Dashwood, I thought of you. And here you turn out to be Elinor! But I adore Elinor, and I adore you, too!
And speaking of Marianne and Elinor, I can’t wait for part two of “Sense & Sensibility” on Masterpiece Theater. Can you?

I am really liking the new version. It is definitely a change for Elinor and Edward to have more spunk. I loathe Willowby in this new film.
I am looking forward to Sunday too.
Love you!

Gosh, I think I better get with it! I see this quiz on so many blogs. As much as I love to read, I’ve never read a Jane Austen book, not even in school! For shame! I’ve been thinking of trying to read at least two classic books a year. Which Jane Austen book would you recommend to start?

Hi, Lisa! Maybe you could take the quiz, and then read the book about whichever heroine you turn out to be most like!
I never read a Jane Austen book until I was in my late 20s, even though I’d had “Emma” on my bookshelf since I was 11 years old! I admit, they are not easy reads, insofar as Jane Austen didn’t exactly have the Strunk & White guide to grammar and punctuation to refer to whilst she was composing her novels!
Some folks might balk at this advice, but this is what I did, and it worked very well for me, as far as getting me “into” Austen’s books and turning me into a huge fan of all her novels. First, watch the 1995 version of “Pride & Prejudice” (starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth). Then read the novel. Then watch the movie again. Compare and contrast. Do the same with “Emma” (I would recommend the Gwyneth Paltrow/Jeremy Northam version of the movie to begin). And so on, to the rest of the novels and their movie adaptations.
The reason I suggest this is because, for me, being able to SEE the action and get a handle on what the characters were (pretty much) supposed to be like helped SO MUCH when I settled in to read the books. Always and ever, the books have so much more to enjoy, but, for me, at least, without first having seen the movies, I would have had an incredibly difficult time getting into the books. I probably would have given up on “Pride & Prejudice” within a chapter or two; instead, I’ve read it straight through, and more than once!
Do be sure to let us know when you do finally read one. Hope you enjoy it!
