A Southern Porch Garden

I’ve been meaning for weeks to tell you about my porch garden.

If memory serves, we began the weekend after Easter. I’ve taken photos along the way. Here’s what the porch garden looked like about two weeks ago:

On the far left, we have thyme and oregano, plus some very small canterbury bells seedlings that you can’t really see. The large plant in the corner is a cherry tomato, and next to it are three regular tomato plants, plus basil and parsley. The two small pots in front are last year’s basil—still growing.

In this shot, we have a tiny glimpse of hyacinth leaves (yellow pot) and marigold seedling (little green pot); plus three pickle cucumber bushes, rosemary, and a red pepper plant.

And now, everything you see is at least half again as large as it was then!

It’s amazing to me how quickly things grow here in the South.

This morning, I found this one cucumber that is bigger than rest so far (looks the size of a “baby dill” pickle, like you buy at the store). My son Levi likes to call these “cute-cumbers!”

And I got this shot of the peppers, which look bigger every time I peek out the sliding glass door at them. They’re just gorgeous.

I am so, so excited about my little garden! Oh, and I forgot to mention, we also planted a raspberry vine and a blueberry bush out in the yard—they’re growing well, too.

I’m looking forward to sharing more about my “bounty” with you this summer. :)

Kim, Your porch garden is so beautiful. Your boys are going to marvel at all the little veggies growing. My boys even started eating new vegetables once we started growing our own. Now they plunder the garden as bad as pests. :)

All of it is lovely. And as I’m sure you can imagine, our tomato plants are still in the little pots here. I haven’t transplanted them outdoors yet. Maybe in a week or two. You already have peppers and cukes. !!!!!!!!!!

The next time you visit Minnesota you’re going to realize what a tundra it is and what a tropical paradise you live in-if you haven’t already.

Thanks for sharing your garden with us readers. It is going to be fun to follow along with the progress of it.

Take good care of yourself. I got your letter, by the way. I’m starting one to you. Love you. Sabrina

  2. Your cucumber and bell peppers look great! They’d look wonderful in a nice salad!

  3. Thanks, girls! A couple of the cherry tomatoes are now ready to be picked! Not enough to do anything with (other than just eat them like grapes), but totally exciting anyway!

  4. Aren’t plants amazing? These strong flowers, fruits, and veggies grew from a tiny little seed. Nature is wonderful :) Ahh…
