The Simple Woman’s Daybook for 9/8/08

Hello, Friends! I can’t believe it’s Monday again. I have so many things I want to post here on my blog this week—thoughts, recipes, photos. Hopefully I’ll get around to it all.

For now, it’s time for The Simple Woman’s Daybook!

Outside My Window…It is brutally humid. Oh, how I miss those northern autumns!

I am thinking...That I’m not sure how I want to swing things today. I’ve got a cold, and so does little Charles. So I’m thinking of skipping my Bible study/apologetics class. But it’s the first one for this semester, and I am responsible for bringing the cheese and crackers for the nursery snack; so I’ll have to stop in anyway, and I know the boys will be heartbroken if I tell them we cannot stay. On the other hand, if Charlie is willing to take a bit of medicine for his stuffy nose, he might be just fine. I don’t think he has any of the really bad symptoms they say you must keep your kid home for. Hmmmm.

I am thankful for…My new Dyson vacuum cleaner. I got halfway through vacuuming my living room with our (nearly completely) useless Hoover on Friday, when it just gave out—the brush wouldn’t turn automatically, the suction was almost non-existent. Probably the belt had broken (again). Last time the belt broke, it cost $30 to replace it. And I’d only fairly recently cleaned the machine pretty good. I suppose since it’s 5 years old, this is the best we can expect. Anyway, my husband and I decided it would make more sense to buy a new vac than to have the old one serviced (and serviced, and serviced, and serviced). There were certainly cheaper varieties than the Dyson, but not having to deal with bags or replaceable filters sounded very appealing to us (at $40 a pop, one can spend a lot every year just paying for new filters). And the Dyson vacuum is supposedly guaranteed never to lose suction. Our first “go” with it was fabulous—these carpets have never been so dirt-free!

From the kitchen…On the supper menu this week: Macaroni and Cheese, Sweet ‘n’ Sour Meatballs, Chili with Cornbread, and Chicken with Stove Top Stuffing (or some generic equivalent).

I am wearing…A red-orange T-shirt, khaki green shorts. Got my hair fixed, earrings in, make-up on; but I’m still bare-footed.

I am creating…This is my least favorite part of the Daybook. It makes me feel so inadequate because I am so seldom truly creating anything! I’m always creating my novel in my head, but I don’t often get to work on it “for real.” Just this morning I was thinking that the whole thing might have to be put off altogether until all three of my boys are in school—two more years!

I am going...To Wally’s today for a few sundries. Tomorrow I won’t have the mini-van, as my husband is taking it in to be serviced.

I am reading…Robin Lee Hatcher’s Trouble in Paradise, which, after just finishing Captain Wentworth’s Diary by Amanda Grange, seems incredibly cliché and boring (it’s a typical contemporary Christian romance novel, where we learn about the hero’s gorgeous smile and bulging tan biceps on practically the first page–ugh). Also reading the Bible book of Acts still, and the July issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine.

I am hoping…My husband gets well soon. He spent the entire weekend being extremely ill with a very bad cold. (I will spare you the details.)

I am hearing…Silence. How lovely is that?!

Around the house…The little boys are still abed. Nearly everything is tidied. I have a little laundry to do this week. Lest you feel too envious of me, do know that the two main bedrooms and the garage both contain varying degrees of “organizational challenges” for me to conquer and that I am always procrastinating on. I need to get rid of stuff. And I need more shelves!

One of my favorite things…Going to sleep on freshly-laundered sheets.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week: (Maybe) Apologetics today, trip to Wally’s, “learning” (homeschool lessons) with Charlie, play games with the kids, help Urban with homework, maybe have a playdate or two—we’ll see.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing…

This is Urban when he was 2-1/2. He always liked to put on my husband's shoes, gloves, and Michigan stocking cap!

Be sure to visit Peggy to read more daybooks and/or get the guidelines so you can participate, too! :)

  2. Hi Kim,

Sorry to hear you and your son are under the weather at the moment… Thanks a lot for posting. Once again, it was very enjoyable to read – and you are creating every day (your blog)… i suppose that’s cheating though isn’t it??? Loved your picture thought. Ever since I first saw it on your page it has become a regular staple on mine.

Hope you feel better! Look forward to hearing from you…

  3. Silence is indeed glorious!

You asked about plantation biscuits. It’s a recipe I make from a cookbook called Hawaiian Plantations Recipe Collection. It’s super simple. I hope to post it one day soon if I can ever manage to snap a photo of the finished product before they are all snatched up.
